Diabetes Mellitus is group of autoimmune diseases with the character of having defects in insulin secretion.
This disease results in hyperglycemia, which basically means getting a high concentration of glucose in the blood and is a highly abnormal occurrence in the body.
There are two kinds of diabetes, type I and type II.
With regard to diabetes type I, this refers to juvenile diabetes, meaning that people who have this disease are incapable of producing pancreatic insulin.
Insulin medication is then injected time and again to help in the survival of these individuals.
For those with type II diabetes, this is known as adult onset diabetes, wherein a person does produce insulin in the body, but it is of inadequate amounts.
The later kind of diabetes is considered a less serious condition which can easily be controlled by diet.
There are many other studies and treatments that go into increasing information about how to treat diabetes mellitus type I.
At one point, it has been said that cannabis can treat diabetes.
As there are a lot of molecules of cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, treatment for diabetes using marijuana, whether smoked or eaten, becomes possible.
The connection of Cannabis and diabetes is still being investigated intensively.
In some preclinical studies, these cannabinoid molecules have been found to actually modify the progression of diabetes and give a symptomatic relief to the people suffering from it.
Studies using animal models have found that the cannabinoids in cannabis have lowered the plasma levels of the pro-inflammatory proteins INF gamma and TNF alpha.
This then stumps the severity of insulitis, which is an inflammation that occurs in the white blood cells of diabetes patients that then results in swelling.
The Cannabis and diabetes connection, then, is that cannabis decreases the incidence of diabetes.
Cannabis and diabetes treatment makes it possible for a patient to control his disease.
The cannabinoids that cannabis possesses also increase protection from diabetic retinopathy.
This condition, which is characterized by retinal oxygen deprivation and breakdown of the blood retinal barrier, can lead to blindness in adults with diabetes mellitus.
Neuropathic pain that comes with the disease is also alleviated by cannabis consumption.
This pain is specifically called allodynia, which is pain from non-injurious stimulus to the skin.
It was also found in animal models that delta-9-THC found in cannabis could moderate the disease by decreasing the amount of artificially elevated glucose levels.
There are still many ongoing studies about the benefits between cannabis and diabetes treatment so, obviously, for type I diabetes, it should not be used to replace insulin.
